about

urgent care started as a monthly playlist. I wanted a way to hold myself accountable for starting and finishing something each month. It was more of an umbrella to contextualize my creative practices. Curating the sounds, covers, and themes led me down an unexpected path. I thought of the name for the brand a long time ago, but it was more rooted in a sentiment of irony, of something I felt we lacked. Communal care in America often seems anything but urgent. The first tag line was, “We are all subject to the systems that lead us to a last resort.” Over the course of this exploration, I was able to dig deeper into what it really was I longed to convey. Aside from nostalgia, the past to me held significance. An objective, collective reference. A space to explore our mistakes and our triumphs. Our truths intersecting. I think my desire to connect with other’s humanity had left me bruised and jaded over the years. Beneath all of the pain of the past was a stronger constant. Joy. Something I find importance in sharing. Whether that be through music, design, or time spent with friends and loved ones. The past informs the present, but we’re not bound to it. I’ve found so much freedom in conceiving myself outside of the confines of the worst case scenario. An interlude from Janet Jackson’s album “The Velvet Rope” resonated deeply with me. Through the crackle of an analog tape recorder she says,
“you don’t have to hold onto the pain to hold onto the memory”
Together we can dismantle the false truths we hold against ourselves.
